Back in 2007 we were featured on FreshDV:
FreshDV Podcast Interview With Gary Bettan of Videoguys
We had the opportunity to be interviewed for a FreshDV Podcast. Gary Bettan of Videoguys recently. We discuss the background history of The Electronic Mailbox/Videoguys, and how they stayed on the cutting edge of digital video and editing since the 1980’s through today. Gary talks about how they led the forefront of video editing back in the day, from simple video faders, to deck-to-deck editing equipment, character generators, and finally to computer-based editing in the late 1990’s (long live the Intel Pentium Floating-Point Error). We then talk about the ways in which Videoguys is helping lead the video editing community in today’s rapidly-evolving industry. One way in which they are helping the PC community is the Do It Yourself computer-building tips they offer; Videoguys will build and test a DIY editing workstation, then publish specs and tips for those who wish to build their own system. Gary also dishes on his experience with the Canon HV20 camcorder and Blackmagic Intensity Pro I/O cards, the advances in Adobe CS3 Production Suite Premium (yay for Blu-ray and Flash authoring options!), new developments in HD formats, new solid-state storage cameras and the V1U/Firestore issue, and storage and card solutions for ncompressed HD and HDCAM editing solutions. A very informative interview, and we thank Gary for his time.
I wanted to take a moment highlight their DIY cookbooks, like this DIY 5 Update. This particular article discusses building a Dual-Core PC editing solution, with detailed specs and options for five different systems ranging in price from $1000 all the way up to $2500. They break it down to specific components and part numbers, the price noted for each part, and notes on overall performance. This is an excellent resource to the build-it-yourself community. You can reach Videoguys at www.videoguys.com, or on the phone at 800-323-2325.

Back in 2006 we designed our new logo:
Why the new logo? and Why now?
For those interested in the detailed background behind this design I would like to share some of our ideas with you. The former Videoguys logo was useful at the time and created with good reason. The folksy, low-tech design was created to contrast the highly technical niche we service. In its infancy, video editing on a computer was no easy task and our goal was to expand that market and reach out to the millions of camcorder owners worldwide to help make the technology a little less intimidating. Our philosophy remains the same but as computer capabilities increase and video editing applications become more main stream we have identified the next growth opportunity!
The future of the industry is HD and the benefit of HD is more vivid and sharper colors with more realistic reproduction. Our new logo is a cleaner, more high-tech design created to represent the advantages of HD. The color wheel displays the full range of the RGB spectrum as displayed in HD. It is also commonly used in the color correction tools of the video editing applications in which we specialize. The wheels were repeated three times to represent the Component video signals required at the very least for an HD display. The circular pattern of the color wheel may also be seen as optical discs symbolizing the next generation of DVD Authoring technology including HD DVD and Blu Ray discs. Combined, we hope this graphic will evoke one or more of these reactions from our target market who will join Videoguys.com as we go "Leading the Way Into HD!"

What Folks are Saying about the Videoguys!
Jim,
Thank you for your commitment to superior customer service. I placed a post on the MC forum at Avid.com regarding your excellent service; the way you have handled this matter is just one more reason why I will use Videoguys for all of my video needs. I will also tell anyone and everyone that the service and customer care received from Videoguys is second to none.
Best wishes and I look forward to dealing with you in the future,
Brad

Wow and Wow again . . . .
You folks have to be the best company I have every dealt with in my 27 years in the video business.
I was not expecting you to send anything, but simply to point me in a good direction. You make my video life so wonderful and every call or email response to and from your operation always leaves me with a happy smile.
Regards,
Chuck
Hi Gary,
Just wanted to let you know how great value your DIY pages have been to me. Besides my lovely Liquid I have Vegas too that I wanted to try out. I installed it on 2 different of my machines with genuine Intel boards (925X and 925EX chipset) and it did not work properly (a culprit somewhere in the playback)….
Then I build a DIY4 with slight changes, and it seems to run like a charm… ;-)
Thanks for all you and your guys do to this video-community!!
And hey, when will we se a www.videoguys.co.uk ;-)
Have a nice day.
Ulf

You may already know Gary as The Videoguy. Those of you on the rec.video.desktop use groups and various on line forums and email lists are probably familiar with his postings. He tries to be informative and honest, while promoting our company and products. It is not an easy line to walk, and he may occasionally cross it. Thank you all for your tolerance and support.
Gary has been interested in consumer electronics and video his entire life. He took television production classes in high school. While attending SUNY Albany he worked part time in a video store renting movies and selling Betamax's. His first real job after college was with Philips CE in Knoxville TN, where he worked as a financial analyst for Magnavox TV Product planning.
This website has been my first child. I started it back when Lisa was pregnant with Max. So we've been doing this for over 10 years. While in real life this is not a very long time, in terms of the web it makes us one of the oldest sites around. While our site is constantly recommended on line and on news groups, one of my proudest moments as a webmaster was when I found out the PC World On Line ( May '99) had included a link to The Desk Top Video Handbook On Line in a story about editing video!
On the personal side, here are some of the things in life I enjoy, and links to websites of interest.

Simply the greatest, best. most fun place on earth! I had the best time! We can't wait to go back. Hopefully for my Birthday!! (Oh yeah, the kids loved it too!)
Here is a very cool link to a website loaded with tips for getting the most out of your Disney vacation. DisneyZone
If you want to have the meals with the characters, you need to book them before your trip. For breakfast with Cinderella in her castle, you have to make your reservation exactly 120 days before. Call 1-800- WDW-DINE. Other great places for meals are Chef Mickey's in the Contemporary, Hollywood & Vine in MGM, and the Crystal Palace at the Magic Kingdom.
If you thought Epcot was just for older kids, think again. Little ones can go around the world and get special gifts at each country. We found Snow White and all the dwarves outside of Germany. The World of Energy ride is fantastic and the dinosaurs look really amazing without being too frightening for little ones. The Illuminations fireworks display and laser light show is incredible. Don't skip Epcot!!

Our favorite places to go for vacation - either with the family or just for a Romantic get away. Lisa & I try to go on a grown-up only vaction to Jamaica every other year. We've taken the kids with us to Beaches Turks & Caicos three times, and we just got back from Negril in February. If you're looking for the very best in all-inclusive resorts, these guys set the standard by which all others are compared. |

Johan is the man. We finally got the ace we so desperately needed. Now it's up to Wright, Reyes and the Carlos to get the job done. It's been two straight heartbreaking years - In 2008 we're going to be great! |

Max & I are Islander season ticket holders. We lost a lot of really good players over the off-season, but hopefully Ted Nolan can keep us playing above our heads. Plus we still have DP in goal! Max's favorite players are Rick DePietro, Mike Comrie, Trent Hunter and Marislov Satan. Mine are Brandon Witt, DP, Campoli and the new kid Blake Comeau. |
|
|
We try to visit at least every other year. Our favorite wineries are Merryvale, Jordan, Freemark Abbey, Silverado & St. Clement. |
|
|
Rich Jim and I had 3 teams this year. We won the Piccolo league again this year (4th time overall), but we can't seen to get past the first round of the playoffs int eh Broadfield League. |
|
|
It's not the same without Jerry, but I really enjoy seeing them over the summer at Jones Beach Amphitheatre. opefully they'll come around again this summer. If not, I'll still catch Bobby & Phil whenever they play the Beacon! |
| Math Education |
I became so upset with the "fuzzy math" being taught to my kids that I joined a concerend parents group, created the POB MATH website and eventually ended up running for and winning a seat on the Plainview-Old Bethpage Board of Education. |

Those interested in seeing more pictures of my family can follow this link |
Rich is a father of 3 boys and is active in all of there little league activities. He is a Graduate of SUNY Oswego (class of '88) and a former camper/counsellor at Camp Watitoh in Becket Mass (1976-1978, 1982-1987).
Richard is also the national sales manager for our wholesale division Broadfield Distributing Inc. So if you are a store looking to resell our products, he is the guy to call (516) 676-2378 ext 102. Please note that Rich observes his birthday every year by attending Opening Day at Shea Stadium to route on the NY Mets.
Rich won an award in high school for his TV Production of Rayman, a spoof on the old Batman TV series. It was hilarious and continues to be shown as part of the Glen Cove High School's TV production class. He is a major Batman fan. If you know of any cool Batman sites (the old TV show, not the movies) email him. He is also always looking for new JPEGs to use as screen savers of the caped crusader. rich@videoguys.com
Phil
Phil's background in consumer electronics is enormous. A ham radio operator since his teens, you could find him in his hamshack for hours at a clip building, and modifying his gear. He also was a semi-professional audio engineer, rigging and micing the local theatre groups and organizations around town. If you have an audio question, Phil is your guy!!
Phil's first video camera /recorder weighed about 30 pounds and required a 600 watt light for decent color!! Even so the picture was grainey and dull. He now shoots primarily with a TR600 and edits using a a Sima SFX-M, SFX-L and a color titler.
About Jim
If you’ve selected to read about me you’re either a friend or family member (HI MOM!) or you’ve just read about all of the other videoguys, so I was the next logical choice. The truth is, however, I am not a videoguy. In fact, when I started working for The Electronic Mailbox, I didn’t know the difference between S-VHS and 8mm! That should stand as a testament to anyone who thinks the technology has left him in the dust. If I can learn about video editing and production, so can you… Just be sure to take advantage of Phil, Gary and Rich’s knowledge, after all they’re the ones who taught me.
If I’m not a videoguy, why am I here? I got here while I was earning my B.S. in Advertising at NY Institute of Technology and I had the opportunity to intern at The Electronic Mailbox. I graduated from the school, ended my internship, and went to work in Manhattan for a public agency. Then, on one fateful day, I received a call from Gary… and that’s when the fun began.
So if you are a representative from a magazine that reaches our customers (or at least think you do), or know of any advertising opportunities that will help The Electronic Mailbox grow, then I am the guy you need. Please send a media kit to me at 10-12 Charles Street, Glen Cove, NY 11542, e-mail me at jim_bask @videoguys.com, or fax the information to (516) 671-3092. Please do not call to solicit.
And now… on a personal note (which is what my friends and family are really waiting for)…
I would like to say HI! to the most unbelievably sexy, gorgeous, beautiful girl that ALSO has a "sparkling personality," the love of my life and FUTURE WIFE! LIZ! `. )
I would also like to acknowledge all of my friends in the martial arts. I am a Nidan (2nd Degree) Black Belt in American Jiu-Jitsu and have been training for over 16 years. In that time I have had the opportunity to meet many great people in the arts, and learn from some of the most prestigious practitioners.
