Groundbreaking HDV features By Kimberly Reed September 2004 Sony jumped into the HDV market announced with the HDR-FX1, but this camera surpisingly falls within its consumer division, not its pro division. The groundbreaking VX1000 DV camcorder also started in Sony's consumer division. As with the VX1000, the main distinguishing feature between Sony's pro and consumer cameras is XLR audio input. Otherwise, the HDR-FX1 has competitive specs, such as three super 1.12 million pixel HAD CCDs in a native 16:9 aspect, 14-bit HD DXP processing, cinema-style gamma curve settings to emulate film look (called Cinematone), and manual zoom and focus. The camera is HDV-DV switchable, and has a 3.5-inch LCD monitor that sits higher and farther forward than most flip-out screens. Both the flip-out LCD monitor and color viewfinder have 250,000-pixel resolution. It has a magnesium alloy chassis and weighs 4 pounds, 10 ounces.
