Avid Media Composer First 2026.8 Removes Major Limits for Free Editors

Avid Media Composer First is getting a major upgrade with version 2026.8. The free editing software now provides a much more complete Media Composer experience, including unlimited tracks and bins and support for projects up to 8K and beyond.

Editors also get the familiar Media Composer timeline, trimming tools, effects, and finishing workflow found in the paid versions. Projects can move between First and Media Composer Standard, Ultimate, and Enterprise, making it easier to start a project independently and continue working with professional facilities and teams.

For students, assistant editors, emerging filmmakers, and anyone learning professional video editing, the change removes a major barrier to developing real-world Avid skills without starting with a paid subscription.
