Beta Preview: Premiere Pro CS3
Digit Online by Neil Bennett
Premiere Pro isn’t taken as seriously by pro editors as Apple’s Final Cut Pro or Avid’s Xpress Pro -- but it’s become a lot more grown-up since taking on the Pro sobriquet in 2003. Though this is the first version of the NLE since then, the CS3 version adds little for Windows users beyond what was in Premiere Pro 2.0 -- which is disappointing -- though you do get the full version of Encore (nà ©e Encore DVD) thrown in, rather than it being sold separately. You also get On Location (nà ©e DV Rack by Serious Magic). The last version of Premiere to be released on the Mac was 6.5 – an aging precursor to Pro that couldn’t keep up with the youthful Final Cut Pro. It also has strong competition on the Mac from the powerful if unforgiving Avid Xpress Pro. It’s odd that Adobe has launched a Mac version, but making the software cross-platform so you can choose your editor then your platform is to be applauded – and something Apple is very unlikely to ever offer. In our tests, Premiere on the Mac ran almost exactly the same as the Windows version -- capture wasn’t working on our Mac build, though the Windows version couldn’t capture HDV for licensing reasons. To users of Final Cut Pro or Avid who haven’t used After Effects, Premiere Pro will seem a little unusual. Its interface is simple and mouse-click-driven, in contrast to Avid’s reliance on keyboard shortcuts and focused tools for an efficient workflow – and Final Cut is the bastard child of the two. read more...
