ChyronHego advancing live production with Lyric IP and NewTek NDI

“I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.” - Queen Elizabeth II
The road to IP-based live production is a difficult one to navigate and should not be contemplated nor attempted alone. Defining, developing, testing, and improving on a new process or way of operating is hard work. capture The longest reigning monarch in British history, Queen Elizabeth II, was on to something with that quote. The difficult can be made less difficult, for the betterment of all, when people combine their talents and work together. ChyronHego is no stranger to IP-based live production solutions or workflows. In fact, ChyronHego and NewTek have been working closely together since 2012, when ChyronHego integrated its industry-standard Lyric graphics creation and playout software with NewTek’s TriCaster® system using an early version of what is now NewTek’s Network Device Interface, better known by its acronym, NDI. This partnership resulted in a new, innovative IP-based product called ChyronIP, now renamed LyricIP. LyricIP customers instantly realize the benefits of this partnership. With LyricIP, ChyronHego graphics stream directly into the TriCaster over a network connection. Valuable video inputs that otherwise would be dedicated to graphics instead remain available for cameras and other vital external sources. NewTek, very much like ChyonHego, is a company that is always looking forward and always contemplating the possibilities of “what if…”. NewTek has since evolved NDI into the leading royalty-free standard to connect professional-grade broadcast video technologies over standard Ethernet. As a result, NDI is now supported across the entire ChyronHego product line. With such widespread support for NDI, ChyronHego products — such as Lyric, Live Compositor, the PRIME Ecosystem, Paint, Virtual Placement, and Hybrid Virtual Studios — are able to see and access content from other devices via standard Ethernet, allowing more sources than ever before to be used, while keeping all workflows intact with a dramatic cost reduction for our customers. In fact, NDI can actually democratize IP workflows for everyone, regardless of size, since it provides even small and medium sized mobile productions and studios a low cost entry to the brave new world of live IP production. Now of course NDI is not the only IP standard vying for the attention of an increasingly IP-interested industry. There are others, including AIMS, and all exist to ensure interoperability for devices related to industry standards such as SMPTE ST2022-6, TR-03 and TR-04, and the emerging 2110, which presents the roadmap for how to send digital video over an IP network. Regardless, ChyronHego designs its products to conform to all of the emerging IP standards. For its part, NDI is one of the most widely adopted IP technology on the market, exemplified by the millions of users with access to it today. NDI might not be the one and only silver bullet, but its simplicity is truly disruptive. By tearing down the wall between the broadcast operation and the much bigger world of IT, ChyronHego is leveraging technologies that have evolved over several decades, and the NDI standard is field-proven for broadcast across thousands of productions. If the recent IBC was any type of barometer of interest, then you could say that 2016 is the year that IP workflows for live production — and the technology that supports those workflows — stepped out from the shadows and made their inaugural appearance. IP-based live production workflows are freeing broadcasters from the rigid inflexibility and limited choice offered through cable-connected hardware, and it’s opening up a new world of instant accessibility to any asset, content, or destination available on the network. It’s truly an exciting time to be a part of our industry, and ChyronHego — an early pioneer celebrating 50 years of continuous innovation — is once again contemplating the possibilities and asking, what if...?
