The university's Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF) conducts crash testing for roadside safety technologies, including innovations such as the SAFER barrier used by NASCAR. These tests can take months to prepare but unfold in just seconds, making every moment of captured video critical.

The Challenge: Getting Crash Test Footage to Stakeholders Faster

MwRSF uses high-speed cameras to capture its crash tests in detail. The challenge was getting that footage to engineers, sponsors, students, and other stakeholders quickly enough to provide useful feedback.

Large high-speed video files could take time to transfer, while attending tests in person added significant travel costs. Even University of Nebraska-Lincoln staff faced a 12-mile trip between campus and the proving grounds.

MwRSF needed a way to make crash test video available remotely without waiting for traditional file transfers.

Pearl-2 Brings Crash Tests to Remote Viewers

By integrating Epiphan Pearl-2, MwRSF created a live streaming workflow that allowed stakeholders to see aggregated high-speed camera footage within seconds of a test.

Remote participants could watch, review recorded sections, and immediately discuss the results with the team. Instead of waiting for footage to arrive, engineers could begin evaluating what happened and planning adjustments for future tests much sooner.

The workflow also reduced the need for stakeholders to travel to Nebraska for every crash test, helping MwRSF save both time and money.

Expanding What's Possible With Research Video

Pearl-2's flexibility has also encouraged MwRSF to explore additional video applications, including 4K workflows, SRT ingestion for low-latency streaming, and live training for engineers and students.
