FIFA World Cup 2026 Showcases the Future of Decentralized Broadcast Production

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is setting a new standard for live sports production by embracing decentralized, IP-based workflows on an unprecedented scale. With 104 matches across 16 venues in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Host Broadcast Services (HBS) and FIFA have shifted key production functions—including replay, graphics, audio mixing, and camera shading—from stadiums to a centralized International Broadcast Center (IBC) in Dallas. This approach allows expert operators to support multiple matches while reducing the need for large on-site production teams.
The tournament also relies on software-defined infrastructure, SMPTE ST 2110 networking, private cloud processing, and JPEG XS compression to efficiently transport hundreds of video feeds between venues and the IBC. The deployment demonstrates how modern IP technologies can make large-scale live production more flexible, scalable, and efficient, potentially shaping the future of major broadcast events.
