Game on! AMD Ryzen Threadripper vs Intel Core i9
It's been a long time since we've seen this kind of CPU competition in the marketplace - AMD Ryzen Threadripper vs Intel Core i9 is heating up to be the battle of the century. This is going to make a huge impact on DIY video editing & live streaming workstations. For the past 4 or 5 years we've seen slow, but steady advancements in CPU technology, with the Intel Core i7 becoming the defacto standard. Those days are over! With the new AMD Ryzen Threadrippers and Intel's new Core i9 series of processors now shipping things have heated up dramatically! We are seeing advancements in motherboard technology and features to keep up with these new CPU beasts. For now we are just going to use this page to link to a bunch of great articles about these new CPUs. I really want to wait and see what happens with Thunderbolt 3 and Ryzen motherboards before we make our own recommendations here. For video content creators, Thunderbolt is very important and we don't like recommending systems that do not support Thunderbolt. For Intel most motherboard manufacturers are now making Thunderbolt 3 daughter cards that allow you to add multiple Thunderbolt 3 ports for under $100.
- PVC: Intel Core i9 vs AMD Ryzen Threadripper: consumers always win The last weeks have been hectic: with Intel’s Core i9 CPU and AMD’s supercharged Ryzen Threadripper in the horizon, video editing is getting a big boost. Time to start dreaming of your next computer. read more https://www.provideocoalition.com/intel-core-i9-vs-amd-ryzen-threadripper-consumers-always-win/
- PC World: AMD Threadripper vs. Intel Core i9: The best CPU for enthusiasts The heavyweight CPU match of the century is finally upon us. Intel’s Core i9 and AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper are facing off in the toughest CPU match in years. Historically, if you wanted the fastest PC chip, you bought Intel. If you wanted to save money, you went with AMD. With Threadripper, AMD claims you can have it all: a low price, and the best performance. read more http://www.pcworld.com/article/3198476/computers/amd-threadripper-vs-intel-core-i9-the-best-cpu-for-enthusiasts.html
- RedShark: Why AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper is such a big deal On 10th August AMD will launch two models of its mighty new Ryzen Threadripper CPU. These are the 1950X with 16 cores at $999 and the 1920X with 12 cores at $799. And they really are going to change how you work with video. The logic behind Threadripper is simple; you take two Ryzen cores, place them on a CPU socket called TR4 (that has the same layout as the SP3 socket used by AMD EPYC server chip) and voilà you have a new CPU that can outgun the latest Core i9 from Intel. read more http://www.redsharknews.com/technology/item/4793-why-amd%E2%80%99s-ryzen-threadripper-is-such-a-big-deal
- Forbes: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and 1920X Processor Review: Is This Intel's Worst Nightmare? This year has seen a ridiculous amount of new hardware released in the PC market. For what I believe is the first time ever, we've had four entirely new ranges of processors and motherboard chipsets launched in less than nine months from two separate manufacturers. January saw Intel's Kaby Lake processors, March saw AMD's Ryzen processors, June had Intel's Skylake-X high-end desktop processors and today AMD is launching its first ever high-end desktop platform and Ryzen Threadripper processors. read more https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2017/08/10/amd-ryzen-threadripper-1950x-and-1920x-processor-review-is-this-intels-worst-nightmare/#6104c8b13b85
- Techspot: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X & 1920X Review After much speculation and an official unveiling last week, it's finally time to see if Threadripper can bring competition to the high-end desktop segment while delivering the value and efficiency we've come to expect from other Ryzen processors. https://www.techspot.com/review/1465-amd-ryzen-threadripper-1950x-1920x/
- ZDNet: AMD or Intel: Which is the right desktop processor for you? Some pointers to help you navigate through the desktop CPUs that AMD and Intel have to offer. Before we go any further, I feel the need to point something out. There are a lot of processors out there, and the market is rapidly changing, so it's impossible for me to tell you the exact processor you need. All I can do is offer pointers and guidance based on your needs. read more https://www-zdnet-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/www.zdnet.com/google-amp/article/amd-or-intel-which-is-the-right-desktop-processor-for-you/
- arstechnica: AMD Threadripper 1950X review: Better than Intel in almost every way If Ryzen was a polite, if firm way of telling the world that AMD is back in the processor game, then Threadripper is a foul-mouthed, middle-finger-waving, kick-in-the-crotch "screw you" aimed squarely at the usurious heart of Intel. It's an olive branch to a part of the PC market stung by years of inflated prices, sluggish performance gains, and the feeling that, if you're not interested in low-power laptops, Intel isn't interested in you. read more https://arstechnica-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/08/amd-threadripper-review-1950x-1920x/?amp=1
- Tom's Hardware: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X Review AMD's 16C/32T Ryzen Threadripper is likely the biggest processor release of the year, quite literally. And that's saying a lot, given the company's rapid-fire releases addressing almost every facet of the desktop market. Now AMD is attacking Intel's high-end desktop stronghold with up to 60% more cores, 36% more PCIe lanes, and 68% more cache than the comparably-priced Skylake-X models. AMD also doesn't hack and slash at its product stack by culling I/O, so the company offers the same connectivity, even on its least-expensive models. read more http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-threadripper-1950x-cpu,5167.html
- PC World: Intel Core i9 review: The fastest consumer CPU prepares for Ryzen war Intel's Core i9-7900X is the fastest Core chip the company has ever sold to consumers. We’re reviewing the first Core i9 chip—Intel’s 10-core Core i9-7900X ($1,000 on Newegg)—as a veritable CPU storm looms. Sure, Core i9 blew in as the most powerful CPU the company has ever sold to consumers, and it’s currently the fastest Core-series CPU available. But an ill wind is blowing: AMD’s Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 chips offer stiff competition in the low end, while its massive 12-core and 16-core Threadripper CPUs loom on the high end. read more http://www.pcworld.com/article/3201187/computers/intel-core-i9-review.html
I’m currently video editing on an old 2012 Mac Pro with dual Xenon 2.4 GHz 6-core processors (32GB 1333 RAM and new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080). Any idea how much of a boost a single new 12 core processor would be vs 2 older 6-core Xenons? I’m mainly using Premier, After Effects, and DaVinci resolve.
