High School Sports Are Getting a Major Live Production Upgrade

Friday night high school sports are starting to look a lot more like professional broadcasts. Schools across the country are adding PTZ cameras, videoboards, instant replay, graphics, and livestreaming technology to create more engaging experiences for fans while giving students hands-on production experience.

Students are increasingly operating the technology themselves. Salesianum School, for example, built a student-run football production with six PTZOptics cameras, vMix, NewBlueFX Captivate for replay, and a SuperJoy controller.

Compact production systems are also making multi-camera sports coverage more accessible. Magewell Director One has been used to produce Pratt High School games in Kansas with a one-person setup, while Director Plus combines switching, graphics, streaming, recording, replay, and other production capabilities into a single system.

The result goes beyond better livestreams. These technologies give students practical experience in video production, broadcasting, marketing, and digital content creation while helping schools build stronger connections with fans and their local communities.
