Intel Core i9 is coming! We'll put it in DIY12!

Very exciting news out of Intel this past week. At its Computex event in Taipei, Intel unveiled its new Core X-series of processors. The debut of its latest high-end desktop CPUs wasn’t a surprise after plans were leaked earlier this month, but the series’ flagship model — the 18-core, 36-thread Intel i9-7980XE — still makes a very loud splash. While it might all seem like overkill, Intel says its Core i9 lineup was driven by the surprising demand for last year's 10-core chip. "Broadwell-E was kind of an experiment," an Intel spokesperson told Engadget. "It sold ... proving that our enthusiast community will go after the best of the best... Yes, we're adding higher core count, but we're also introducing lower core counts. Scalability on both ends are what we went after." We're going to look to put the Core i7-7820 8-core $599 version of the processor into our DIY12 build using an X99 chipset based motherboard. We'll also put together a higher performing build using the Core i9-7900X 10-core $999 processor going into an X299 chipset motherboard that supports i9 and Thunderbolt 3.
