Live From #NAB2014 – Lone Wolf And Cub – Atomos Releases Two Badass Recorders – The Shogun and Ninja Star

HDVideoPro by Neil Matsumoto

Perhaps the company that garnered the biggest crowds at its NAB2014 booth was Atomos. Their affordable HDMI field recorders and converters (named after Japanese feudal warriors) have become essential gear, especially after the release of Clean HDMI-enabled DSLRs. At this year’s show, the Australian-based company released two ground-breaking recorders that had every shoe-string budget filmmaker drooling from the mouth.

First up is the Shogun 7? IPS monitor/recorder that is being aligned with Sony’s new A7S’s full-frame 4K compact camera (probably my favorite camera at the show). At the moment, the Shogun is the only 4K HDMI recording solution that can take advantage of the A7S’s extreme low-light capabilities, clean HDMI out, 120 fps HD and custom HDMI timecode. Used in tandem with the A7S, you can record 4K ProRes onto single SSDs or RAIDed HDDs. The Shogun is also the first 4K HDMI and 12G SDI monitor recorder and deck.

Like the Samurai and Ninja Blade, Shogun can capture higher-quality 422 10-bit files straight from the camera sensor using 4K/HD ProRes, uncompressed RAW CinemaDNG or Avid DNxHD files. The 1920 x 1200 7? monitor also has waveform and monitor assist tools like luma parade, vectorscope and tri-level focus peaking for true professional recording.

The Shogun will be available later this year for under $2,000. Smart move by Sony to team up with Atomos rather than offering their more expensive recorders.

The second recorder that Atomos announced is the Ninja Star, which is targeted towards shooters who need to record ProRes on board camera rigs, or on remote devices like drones, RC helicopters, extreme sports, etc. The Ninja Star is also great for when you already have a high-quality professional monitor on set. The Ninja Star is pocket-sized (3.5? wide, 2.3? tall and .8? deep) and weighs only 3.5-oz, yet still durable so you can mount in hard to reach places. And because you’re capturing ProRes files, once offloaded, they’re ready to be edited right there on location. It can record in both HD and ProRes 422 10-bit images to first generation CFast media with up to 3-hours of ProRes for $250. It also has Timecode and Start/Stop Trigger along with Audio Line-in. read more...
