One of the things that I think has been overlooked this past year with Avid's Everywhere initiative and the new 'flavors' of Media Composer (see our Avid Guide to the new Media Composer [Software for complete details) is how ridiculously affordable Avid is now for students, teachers, educators and Academic institutions. Let's review all the great options Avid has given students and educators:

Teacher and Students can subscribe to Media Composer for less than $10 per month!
That's right, less than $10 per month. As long as you purchase an annual subscription, it only costs students and teachers $119 per year ($115 from Videoguys). This is insane. You get the very latest version of Media Composer, along with the Symphony option and a full years worth of updates, upgrades and phone support.
Exisitng Academic Media COmposer owners can upgrade for undr $100 per year!
If you already own an older version of Media Composer (Or Media Composer with Symphony), you can purchase an 1 Year Annual Support Plan & Renewal for Teachers, Students & Institutions for just $99 ($95 from Videoguys).

With the annual support contract you get any and all updates and upgrades plus phone support. What a great deal. You keep your software, even if you decide not to renew the support contract. It simply gets frozen on the last version you downloaded and installed.

Educational facilities needing more than 6 seats of Media Composer should go to an Academic Floating License and save hundreds or even thousands of dollars!

The Avid floating license allows you to deploy 20 or 50 seats of Media Composer throughout your network. You install the license server on a network server or workstation, and with it you manage which machines in your network are activated.

Academic Floating License packs come to under $100 per seat! A Media Composer [ Software Floating License, 20-Pack ACADEMIC with Floating License Server is just $1999 ($1,899 from Videoguys). The 50-Pack ACADEMIC is just $4,999 ($4,699 from Videoguys). That is an incredible deal for both new and existing Avid customers. You can combine and combination of Floating packs (20 & 50s) to create whatever level of deployment fits your needs and budget.

Another big advantage of the Floating licenses is that you can control which computers in your facility are activated, allowing you to stretch your dollars even further. Let's say you have 3 Avid labs, with 8 computers each, but you typically only have 2 of the 3 labs in use at any given time. You could use a 20-Pack license server to meet all your needs. If you have two labs of 20 seats each, you may want to get a 50 seat license to give you some flexibility to allow some of the additional seats to be "checked out" so that students or teachers could run Media Composer on their personal laptop or their computer back at the dorm.

The Academic Floating License is an incredible deal that combines value and control. Even if your facility already has a bunch of Avid seats, you should look into upgrading and consolidating them into floating licenses.
