We've been getting a lot of calls lately asking when we are going to update our DIY build. It's been two years since our DIY11 build and I have to admit, we've fallen behind. So last night I'm going through my YouTube feed and I see a link to an interesting video posted by Newegg https://www.youtube.com/embed/aI-enLBUtmQ (I've embedded the video at the end of this article). We get all the parts for our Videoguys DIY builds from Newegg and videos like this are fantastic way to learn how to build a gaming rig. The same skills and knowledge apply to building a DIY workstation.
I decided to use the build from the video as the starting point for our Videoguys DIY12 build. As you guys know, we are a big fan of ASUS motherboards for our DIY builds. While the GIGABYTE Z270X mobo used in the video is fine, I wanted to use the equivalent ASUS motherboard. SO I did some research on the ASUS website about their Z270 series motherboards. https://www.asus.com/microsite/best-200-series-motherboards/US/. I zeroed in on the ROG STRIX series.
So I'm poking around Newegg, putting my parts list together and I find this incredible pre-pack bundle with a $70 savings! https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3485377. All you need to add is Windows Pro 10 and the Pioneer Blu-ray burner.
Caution! The ASUS Z270 motherboards do not currently support Thunderbolt, which is a big concern for me. But the bundle deal from Newegg is so good I had to post this. Hopefully in the near future ASUS will introduce a Thunderbolt compatible Z270 motherboard. For now you'll just have to settle for USB-C which delivers 10Gbps thoughput (vs 40Gbps for Thunderbolt 3 or 20Gbps for Thunderbolt 2).
